In Words

"Deprogress" is a coined word. It was created by combining the prefix "de-," which means "to move down, withdraw, deteriorate," with the word "progress," which means "to move forward." The meaning of deprogress is "the occurrence of regression when progress is thought to be happening." Although it evokes the same meaning as the Turkish saying "az gittik uz gittik dere tepe düz gittik döndük baktık ki bir arpa boyu yol gitmedik" (we traveled a little, we traveled far, over hills and valleys, we turned and looked, we hadn't even traveled the length of a barleycorn), it points out that not even the length of a barleycorn was traveled, but rather a negative outcome was reached. The phrase "one step forward, two steps back," which implies a bodily activity or a dance move, might better capture the essence of deprogress.

This work is conceptualized by incorporating the linocut printing method into the meaning of the work. The act of repeatedly printing by destroying the linoleum mold refers to the reversal of the process of language formation.
